Investigate large gaps, sudden drops to zero, and totals that do not match real enquiries.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Step 1: Check the conversion action in Google Ads<\/h2>\n<p>Open the conversion actions list in Google Ads and read the status of the action you care about. Statuses such as 'No recent conversions', 'Unverified' or 'Inactive' tell you whether Google has seen the tag recently. Also check three settings that quietly distort data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary or secondary.<\/strong> Only primary actions are used for bidding. A secondary action can show conversions and still not influence Smart Bidding.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Count.<\/strong> 'One' suits leads (one form, one lead). 'Every' suits purchases. Confirm the conversion tag shows as fired on the right event, and fired only once.<\/li>\n<li>For GA4, use DebugView and confirm the event arrives with the expected name and parameters.<\/li>\n<li>In the browser's developer tools, open the Network tab and look for the request to Google's collection endpoint when the conversion happens. No request means the tag did not fire; a blocked request points to an ad blocker or consent setting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the tag fires in Preview but not for real visitors, suspect consent settings, a caching or minification plugin that rewrites scripts, or a different container version published to the live site than the one you tested.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Step 3: Check the Conversion Linker and auto-tagging<\/h2>\n<p>Google Ads conversions rely on a click ID (gclid) appended to the landing page URL when auto-tagging is on. The Conversion Linker tag in Google Tag Manager stores that click ID in a first-party cookie so a conversion on a later page can be matched to the ad click.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Confirm auto-tagging is switched on in the Google Ads account settings.<\/li>\n<li>Confirm the Conversion Linker tag fires on all pages.<\/li>\n<li>Check redirects. A redirect from http to https, from non-www to www, or through a link shortener can drop the gclid before the page loads. Test by opening a landing page URL with a dummy gclid parameter and checking that it survives to the final URL.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2>Step 4: Check GA4 key events and the Google Ads link<\/h2>\n<p>GA4 now calls conversions 'key events'. If Google Ads imports a GA4 key event, three things must be true: the GA4 property and Google Ads account are linked, the event is marked as a key event, and the event actually fires on the real conversion step.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid counting the same action twice. If you track a form submission with a native Google Ads conversion tag and also import the matching GA4 key event, set only one of them as the primary action. A common sign of double counting is Google Ads reporting roughly double the leads you can find in your inbox or CRM.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Step 5: Follow the user across domains and payment pages<\/h2>\n<p>If the checkout, booking engine or form lives on another domain, the visitor can arrive as a new session or as a referral from the payment provider, and the original source is lost.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In GA4, list all the domains in the cross-domain configuration so the session ID is carried across.<\/li>\n<li>Add payment gateways and booking tools to the unwanted referrals list so they do not take credit for the sale.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the Conversion Linker tag also runs on the second domain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2>Step 6: Check consent handling<\/h2>\n<p>A cookie banner can switch off the tags that record conversions. Google Consent Mode uses four signals: ad_storage, analytics_storage, ad_user_data and ad_personalization. If your banner sets these to denied by default and never updates them to granted after the visitor accepts, tags will keep running in a restricted mode and reported conversions will fall.<\/p>\n<p>Test the banner in both states: reject everything, then accept everything, and watch what the tags do in Tag Assistant. Prefer a form-success event pushed to the dataLayer, or make sure the thank-you page cannot be revisited to inflate counts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Form submit triggers.<\/strong> A generic 'form submit' trigger can fire when validation fails, so a visitor who never completed the form is counted. Fire on the success state instead.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Single-page apps and pop-up forms.<\/strong> The URL may not change, so a page-view trigger never fires. Use a custom event.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calls and chat.<\/strong> A click on a phone number records a tap, not a connected call. Both need the right fields captured at submission (for example the gclid stored with the lead in your CRM) and a way to upload them regularly.
